Gentoo impressions

For shits and giggles I decided to try out Gentoo on my personal workstation. So after doing a carefull backup to a remote tape drive (using Amanda, and that's a whole other ball of wax) I booted the Live CD 1. This was at 3:30PM Sunday. I went to bed at 12:00AM while genkernel was running.

I am now on m 12th hour (sitting at the desk watching stuff compile) of the install and I still have not booted into a usable OS. My first impressions are not very good so far. I would never be able to use this for a server OS, specially on a box without internet access.

The performance gains better be blazing on my Athlon XP 1700, or this distro will be gone in a flash. The good news of course is that I can get my old workstation back up and running in about 45 minutes, which includes restoring all my personal files using rsync from a secondary partition.

I guess we'll see how much longer this takes. If the OS is not running by 10:00PM tonight than I will giving up on Gentoo and may give Suse a try.
