ximian gnome 2 is a-crashin'

So, this morning I get the bright idea to update Gnome on my RH 7.2 box at work. I use Red Carpet for my update needs, and I get the most recent developer snapshots for Gnome 2. I restart X, and when Gnome runs, it spawns dozens of copies of Nautilus, each of which crashes and coughs up errors. When I clear those, more windows open up.

I disabled Nautilus in /usr/share/gnome/default.session, and restarting, it seemed to work. This time, though, gnome-panel would often reset whenever I clicked on a pull-down menu for more than half a second. This makes the program quite a bit less than usable for me.

And then there's the third problem of certain Gnome programs (Galeon, Evolution, etc.) taking forever and a day to start up in KDE (read: 15-20 minutes on a 1.4GHz Athlon). But that's currently a side concern.

Anyone know of ways I can deal with these problems? This is really frustrating me and eating away at my patience.
