ftp servers
I don't know if anyone else has this problem but when someones connected to my ftp server and DL'ing, the whole house bandwidth goes right to hell. We're 1.5 down and 768 up and this guy logs on with client called ftp_surfer and the house network comes to a standstill for inbound/outbound traffic. And the person doing the downloading only gets around 30-40K so its not like they're using it all up you dig.

This doesn't happen with scp or sftp from the command line as far as i can tell. Just ftp. Anyone ever run into this before? I've tried both pure_FTPD and proFTPD servers with identical results. I won't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the various ftp servers and wouldn't be terribly surprised if someone told me they were the same app... (I know they're not but y'know)

Thanks all

Hi all. I am attempting to set up Nfs on 2 internal machines (192.168.0.254 is the server, 192.168.0.1 is the client). I have the following currently in /etc/exports...Note: I intend on
changing the configuration once I get it working: /home/ftp *(sync,no_root_squash,rw)

The permissions on /etc/exports are the following: root@igueths:~# ls -l /etc/exports
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 189 Sep 21 00:38 /etc/exports

And when I attempt to mount that filesystem from the client, I get: root@shadwiga:~# mount 192.168.0.254:/home/ftp /home/ftp
mount: 192.168.0.254:/home/ftp failed, reason given by server: Permission denied

I have compiled NFS server, NFS V2/V3 support as modules in my 2.6.6 kernel. Lsmod is currently showing the following: root@igueths:~# lsmod
Module Size Used by
nfsd 73992 0
exportfs 7552 1 nfsd
lockd 53192 1 nfsd
sunrpc 151556 2 nfsd,lockd

The rest are sound modules, which is why I didn't paste the entire list. One thing I found peculiar though, is that nothing I exported showed up in /proc/fs/nfs/exports, but it would show up
in /var/lib/nfs/etab. Any ideas as to why that might happen? Not to mention that said peculiarity was mentioned in the NFS HOWTO as being a sign of a problem. The other daemons that are
running besides the kernel-level NFS server...I currently have portmap, statd, and mountd as well. Anyone have any ideas as to what I might be missing? I have a friend that has it working,
however on a 2.4.26 kernel. Thanks!

Maybe you could help...
I'm really new to linux and I've recently run into a problem. Hopefully somebody can help.

First of all, I'm using Fedora Core with GNOME desktop. Okay.

I've recently been trying to make my desktop environment look however I want, playing around with all the settings (very basically), and just familiarizing myself with everything. Yesterday I decided I was going to try and put my panel on the top of my screen rather than on the bottom and change around the icons and the splash screen, the works.

My one problem is that now when I minimize any screen it goes nowhere. Sure I can get it back when I alt+tab, but that's just a pain. I want it to go in the panel... that's what it's for. I even tried moving the panel back to the bottom, didn't work. Rebooted, nothing works. Any window that is minimized goes into the great abyss off my screen.

It's probably a bug, but has anyone had any similar instances? How should I go about fixing this? Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated.

Beginner's Accomplishments.
I customized my first desktop in Linux this morning. Most of you will probably laugh at me but it took me forever and I'm proud of it. I've been forcing myself to install everything and do as much as I can through the console, not through the GUI. So I guess that's something.

I adore Linux.
And Kevin Rose, but that's besides the point.

Anyway, would you like to see my first desktop?

I thought maybe you of all people could appreciate it.

And also I wanted to ask where, if you don't make them yourself, do you get your themes? What are some good websites for themes that you frequent?

Scroll Wheel
Does anyone know how to activate the scroll wheel in XFree86?

I'm running Debian 'sarge' and I have a generic PS/2 mouse with a scroll wheel. All 3 buttons work and the scroll wheel works as the middle button, but I can't scroll with it.

The configuration for the mouse is:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Default Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

PPP is fun!
(Thanks for the help. It turns out it was just jumper stuff; the box is a minimal 486 with a verified Real Modem. Now I just have to figure out how to make it authenticate.)

Linare where?
So, recently Linare was added as a freee distro download at distrowatch (or some such). I downloaded it for a look see and put the .iso on cd and then. . . .

nothing.

now, for once I actually burned the .iso properly. It started the install and it stalled out halfway through. Any thoughts on this? Did it happen to anyone else? I was loading in on VMWare and the dostro may just not like VMWare (though that makes my head hurt in and of itself).

(aside: on a list of things that make my head hurt. I have a girl here at work who uses an old windows machine. There's an old CD that we've overwritten and every time she looks at it on her machine it shows the old files. In fact, it not only shows them but it can open and display them properly. Now, they're not on there. I've checked it on my own system in a few different way. They're just ghost files specific to her machine. And it only happens with that one CD . . . it boggles the mind!)

Anyway, just thought I'd ask if I was the only one who had experienced this.

later,
~joe

Anyone have suggestions on the best way to upgrade a RedHat 7.1 system to 9.0? I need basically identical configuration, and the system is all console based, no GUI. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to make this switch?

Linux Networking
I have just nabbed Mandrake 10 with kernel v2.6. It runs fine except it does not have a native driver for my Netgear WG311T wifi card. I tried Ndiswrapper, but I couldn't get it to work. Does anyone have any suggestions to get it to read my windows driver instead?

Couple of questions
I just recently activated the xinerama flag in my xorg.conf, and I'm no longer able to change the resolution of my monitors while inside KDE. KDE complains about needing the RANDR extension and recommends that I upgrade to version 4.3 of XFREE, but I'm already running xorg. Is there a flag I need? Oh, and my main monitor has begun using a virtual resolution of 1280x1024 even though before I enabled xinerama it was set at 1152x864 and i've never even set a virtual size.

Also, while xinerama is on, I can't play music without the sound becoming choppy in Noatun. It sounds like its squeaky (thats the best description i can give) and I'm not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions?

Again, I appreciate any help or direction I can get from you guys.
~Luke

UPDATE: I've figured out that the sound clipping only happens when I'm using Konquorer as a webbrowser. Is it a resource hog?
