Time Event
I'm trying to help convert a local school district to all linux (which means first the middle school/elementry, then highschool). I started by helping the local staff set up samba for the computer lab (about 60 new dell comps running over wireless). The current samba server is running on an 800 or so and I'm not entirely sure it can take the abuse of 60 people saving 2-3 megs worth of stuff all at once. I set up a samba server for the college newspaper and it seems pretty solid, but it's never had to take the abuse of more than 5 users.

So I thought it might be interesting to try to build a cluster out of 3 800s and a 200 and see how it works. For all my limited linux experiance, I've never done clustering and I don't know the first thing about it. I set up the cluster using the CI kernel thiggy for red hat 9, and I'm not entirely sure what to do next. From what I've read I was thinking about setting up Samba on the two slave nodes and NFS on the primary node so that the home dir lived on the primary node and the slave nodes provided access to it, but I don't know that that would help at all. All the clustering doccumentation I've read has been a touch on the complex side and I've just started using linux within the year...
Any ideas??

can anyone give me a quick rundown on how to make an applet for gnome panels or point me towards a good site about it? nothing fancy, just displaying simple data from somewhere.

Preventing a process from writing to disk
Does anyone know if linux (or any other unix) offers a way to prevent a particular process from writing to disk? This might be useful in a situation where you don't want your system to be compromised even if there is a buffer overflow vulnerability in a program - you can be sure that the attacker can't modify your system by exploiting the vulnerability.
