Is it just me or is the 2.6 kernel really fast?

I just installed Fedora Core 2 and it seems blazingly fast, much faster than core 1.

Is is the kernel or the release? I think the kernel.

Whats the fastest way to transfer files between machines?
Have inadvertantly kinda danced around this question in the past two weeks but not actually asked it - sorry if it sounds familiar.

I have a server and a terminal on a dedicated connection transmitting a great deal of data back and forth and want to know... whats the fastest way to transfer files between these two machines? This is a dedicated Tbase100 (full duplex) connection which should give me 12.7MB max throughput. (I get about 11.5 to 12 in benchmarks so, i'm about on par I'd say). With Samba I'm getting around 850KB/s, SCP gets me around 3.5MB/s... What else is there thats faster?

Oh, benchmark tool I used was NetIO...
