Time Event

On my desktop, I have a HD w/ two partitions - /dev/hda1 & /dev/hda5. Apparently, I fscked something up whilst installing / configuring Gentoo, but I can't figure out what. I could boot to /dev/hda1 after the install. I recompiled the kernel (All I did was change SCSI settings; /dev/hda1 would boot before that; I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything else that would mess it up) and can't access the partition at all anymore. I can still get to /dev/hda5 without a problem, so I didn't trash the whole disk. Anyone know of a way I can fix this without losing what was on /dev/hda1?
