Sounds issues on Ubuntu

My laptop completely crashed, so I opted for a desktop for many reasons. It came with Windows 7, and after many tries of installing Ubuntu, I finally got it installed about the fifth time.

Anyway, my sound was working fine at first. Then, it stopped working on Ubuntu through the speakers, but it would play through the headphones.

I know these two things shouldn't have affected things, but just so you know, my mom had logged onto Windows and my sister was using the headphones, but she had muted them (they have a volume and mute on them) so she could hear something on the television.

When I came to use my computer again, the sound didn't work through the headphoens or through the speakers. I've tried every combination that I have in my sound options both with and without the headphones, but sounds never play.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). I know my Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Can anybody tell me what I need to do in order to fix this problem?
